About Memory Quilt-Collage:
Pnina Pressburger began the Memory Quilt-Collage Project in September 2015 as a way to collaborate with
textile and collage artists in the production of experimental, mixed-media art. The textile and collage artists
involved in this collaboration met with Martha Jackson, who is the primary designer at Restored by Design,
a women’s clothing store, now located in Narragansett, RI. When these artists met with Jackson, she shared
with them her methods for transforming and repurposing found antique fragments of fabric. The textile and
collage artists also met with Lauren Pearlman, who directs Paper Connection International, a company
based in Providence, RI, that is a supplier of Japanese handmade paper. When the artists met with Pearlman,
they explored different ways of working with handmade papers. Furthermore, the textile and collage artists
met with curator Emily Peters at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, for a private viewing
of an experimental collage titled Ritual, c. 1965, by Romare Bearden (1911-1988). Before meeting with
Peters, the artists attended a screening of the documentary film titled The Art of Romare Bearden (National
Gallery of Art, 2003) at the Weaver Library, East Providence, RI, where they also participated in a
discussion about this documentary, which was lead by artist/educator Keith Fox. In addition to the foregoing
activities, the textile and collage artists, who are involved in this collaboration, participated in many other
activities to help them to further develop this project, which has resulted in the Memory Quilt- Collage
Exhibit. For further information about these activities, as well as the Memory Quilt-Collage Project in
general, please contact Pnina Pressburger at artistsloop.ri@gmail.com
