Event Description:

State Seeking Public Input on Future Transit Investments

Public workshops are being held this month as agencies working on the state’s first master transit plan narrow down the transportation options that will be included in the final plan which is slated to be completed later this year.  The master plan project – called “Transit Forward RI 2040” – is intended to create a vision for the future of transit in Rhode Island. It is a collaborative effort between the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA), the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and the Division of Statewide Planning.

Four informal workshops are being held in different parts of the state this month so the public can have input on options that include bus service extended to more communities, higher frequencies on many bus routes, longer service hours, light rail service in the greater Providence area, and enhanced commuter rail service between Providence and Boston.

Officials encouraged the public to participate in the workshops.  “I think the public will be interested to see ideas for introducing improved or new transit services across the state,” said RIPTA CEO Scott Avedisian. “We are hoping they will weigh in to help us prioritize these potential future investments.”

“This is a great opportunity for public involvement in planning for future transit investments, and I encourage Rhode Islanders from Woonsocket to Block Island to attend a workshop, ask questions and voice their opinions,” said Meredith Brady, Associate Director of Statewide Planning.  “Public input is vital to connecting the places we live, work, and play in Rhode Island.”

These workshops will be accessible to persons with disabilities and upon request, persons with limited English proficiency.  RIPTA will provide translation and interpreter services for the deaf and hearing impaired, provided such a request is made at least 72 hours prior to the hearing date. A request for these services can be made in writing or by calling (401) 784-9500 ex. 1242 or 800-745-5555 (RI Relay TDD).
